Walking through the vineyards for this morning, our first glimpse of tiny ‘bud break’. The fresh young shoots of leaves and cane pushing skyward. They are tiny but here they come. It is still raining a lot, which is good… and it is still chilly.
That warm weather we had a few weeks ago teased us into thinking buds would come early. When that happens, fear of a late frost in April is always looming… Keeping our fingers crossed for a fabulous growing season.
Veraison – 2017 Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
As the pink and purple faces emerge in the beautifully well formed bunches, harvest is said to be 90 days out. Sugar is already reaching 11 & 12 brix.
Warm Days and Cool Nights
After several days of 90-100 degree weather… the welcome fog rolled in last night. WHEW!!! Being only 20 miles from the ocean… our grapes love the warm days and cool nights…. keeps ’em real juicy! The grapes are looking so happy…. And there are a LOT of them this year!!
We love Sonoma County….
Beautiful Grapes
With this hot weather, the grapes are so happy. If you look at the shoots and stems, you can see that they are ripening and starting to change from green to red to brown. The big stems will now be known as ‘CANE’. In a very short while (next couple of weeks), the grapes will start to turn red as well…. it is called ‘VERAISON’. It is so pretty and very exciting when they start to change color.
Days Are Warmer and Warmer
Love that late afternoon golden light overlooking the winery and vineyard through the side door……
California poppies… pure gold
Feels Like Summer
Shown here are some photos of our gorgeous flowering clusters.
So let’s see….. we made it through April and May without any disastrous storms disturbing our Cabernet Sauvignon bloom. We have had some off-shore high winds that did seem to knock off some of the blossoms, but there is an amazing amount of fruit that has set. It has been very hot for about 3 weeks. 80s & 90s. The grapes are loving it. We have turned on the drip for the first time to give the roots a good deep watering….. the roses too.
